Due Date

So this is it the last day of the media project. Thank God! Got back my magazine, not exactly what I had expected but it works, thinking that I would have liked to print it on recycled paper but oh well. Anyway good luck to me!!

Magazine printing now!

I called the printers today to follow up on the progress on the magazine, they said it would be ready by tomorrow morning at 9am. Last friday I submitted it and sat down with the graphics guy there to ensure the resolution is fine and that the bleed is ok as well and picked out the paper I wanted just to ensure that I got no surprises. Everything was well on that end so thats cool.

Looking back at my proposal submitted many things have changed in the sense of some of the articles I wanted to discuss as writers were slim on that end. I do hope tho that the target audience indicated in the proposal will be met in the magazine. I am proud of it, so regardless of what come of it grade wise I know i did my best!!

Forgot to mention, we have an exhibition coming up where we have to display our various media projects, I was thinking to use the projector in the school and to display the magazine website, people can turn the pages of the magazine and view it that way as well... I think it will work except for I am now thinking the light issues with the projector as I am sure the room will be well lit.

hmmmm

will have to figure something else out

PS i have added the final pdf to the blog check it out

Hey

So since I last signed in I showed Desiree where I had reached thus far, she gave me some comments about the layout for a garden spread I had done. I promised that I would have all of the magazine completed by the time I saw her again which was the following week, I fixed the issues she had with one of the spreads, I have been getting some problems finding ads so i decided that I would not try to fill the space with ads instead I found pictures and comments to make up the space. The last time I had to show my progress was on the 29th and Desiree suggested that I put in an Editors page which I did. It looks pretty good I sent it to be proof read and it was received well. I sent it to print today, was way over the budget, I only managed to be able to afford to print one copy. It came up to $300.00 for one print so, the other prints for the exhibition will have to be on normal paper. I will be collecting this print on monday. Will tell you how it looks.....

Design and layout

Ok so i've decided to go with the same layout and design of the previous magazine you see to the left of the page. I will update the front page to make it look a bit more like a fashion mag such as using a huge picture of something with food and garden to take up the whole page. With the cover having the titles of what to expect inside. I'll be starting this week with the design while i'm still in the process of collecting information, i thought this might make more sense and kill two birds at the same time. In addition, i have collected information on at least 4 topics which is enough to start putting together.

Grow Box

I finally got through to the Ministry of Agriculture, they called me back with name of the trainer in Belmont who could help me find people who have been maintaining their grow box. I contacted Ms. Patricia Crossley who gave me the names of 6 people she knew in her area and the St. James area i could contact. After calling nearly all of them, most of them had already reaped their plants or was not willing to meet with me i contacted a Cynthia Braithwaite living in Belmont, Waterman Road. She and her husband were most delighted for me to come and meet them and to show me their garden. We set up and appointment for 4pm today. I went to the place they were very helpful to me as well, and for the small space they have it is occuped quite well. She even gave me some limes to take back home with me as she says limes are her vitamin c and economical to her to have a tree. It is 2.50 in the grocery she informed me. I also got some fern seeds to take home as well and try my hand to plant. I was invited to come back and get some tomatoes just as soon as they ripe. In addition, i had a phone interview with another lady by the name of Jane Whiskey about the grow box project and her experiences with it. Well this weekend is all about taking more pictures of some gardens, different gardens and after the summit i can make my way up to UWI and Freeport to complete two more articles.

Meeting Dates and confirmations

Well... I'm meeting with Mrs. Patricia Jagessar at UWI on Thursday at 2pm, she is doing a thesis on the symbiosis of gardens, people and groups In addition, she is taking me to the food park to see what the agricultural department is doing on new and traditonal methods of farming. I have another shot at a meeting with JOhn Banfield on his hydrophonics method, hoepfully i can get there this time!! The ministry of Agriculture is contacting someone in my area that i can link up with in terms of the growbox initiative to see what they have been doing. I will call them back however cause you know how the ministries can give you the run around. Went onto consumer affairs website and got some useful info on shopping, saving money at the grocery etc. However i tried calling them 3 times today and they are always busy. Until next time its Media Wyke signing out!!! lol

Appointment made but never made it

So i called John Banfield, the hydrophonics guy and made an appointment with him to go to his farm in Freeport. He organised that he would pick me up at 4:30 as he lives in Diamond Vale. SO we agreed to this. It is now 11pm and i just had a thought that i dont know him, dont exactly know where freeport is either so i sent him a text to tell him that i wanted to re-schedule, cause i wanted to bring a friend, i told him that safety was an issue. He called me right after and proceeded to laugh at me for being so over protective of myself... he said that he wasn't going by himself he was going with his best friend and cousin, i started to laugh and told him that didnt make things any better!!! He asked me what i want to know about him so that i would feel better about going with him. I replied a murderer would not say that he murders people would he!! Anyway long and short of the story, i re-scheduled for another time later this week. Yup so i could have been left to die in Freeport LOL LOL.

Presentations

So... We had our presentations today, mine went ok, i think people understood what i wanted to do, no-one asked any questions tho, not sure if it was cause they understood or because they were not interested. I asked a couple people after what they thought and they liked the idea and the concept. Hope i can live up to the expectations... I however forgot to mention that the magazine would be an online one but so it goes.. until next time

Catch you on the flip side!

MediaWyke decides on final Media project

So, we have to come up with this brilliant innovative idea for our final media project and for once i was at a loss. For the past three years i have been doing everything with or around television production. So for my final project i have decided to do a magazine. Yes it may sound a bit boring but i think my idea is kinda cool.

So Patrick Manning say tighten yuh belt! Honestly i'm so tired of that phrase where did it even originate anyway??? My mag is going to be on Food and Garden, how to grow your food and i mean food that you cam make a meal out of not just tomatoes and herbs to make pasta i talking about real trini food. I want to talk about the grow box iniative that was happening in Trini not to long ago as well as growing a garden for specific spaces whether it be a studio apt or a 5 bedroom house with plenty garden space. I'm going to be looking at hydrophonics which is growing vegetables without soil, as well as plants that can be used for medicinal purposes. In addition you know you have to get some easy to make recipes.

So thats about it i started sourcing some prices to print the mag through some friends in the ad agencies. I am also fiddling with the idea of doing a flash based website for the mag as well just for the fun of it.

Thats all for now
